Apple’s Siri Teams Up With Wolfram Alpha

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting mike melanson Tags:#Apple#news#web Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… When we first reviewed Siri last February, we called it “one of the most ambitious mobile services we have seen in the last few years.” At the time, we acknowledged that, while Siri – which was recently acquired by Apple – has answers for a plethora of questions, it wouldn’t be able to handle them all. We lamented that “sadly the app doesn’t use Wolfram Alpha to give you answers to factual questions (yet).” Today, we lament no longer, as the latest update to the virtual personal assistant notes that it can now provide you with “more knowledge and computation results” using “computational knowledge engine” Wolfram Alpha. We first ran into Siri nearly two years ago now and since then the company has been on a tear. During this year’s SXSW Interactive, we quickly pegged it to run away with the BizSpark Accelerator competition and soon after it was acquired by Apple. Now, a partnership with Wolfram Alpha can really bring Siri to the next level. Before now, Siri was limited to a select number of categories and information types that it could answer questions or provide services for. It could reserve you a table for two at a local steak house using OpenTable. It could help you buy tickets to a five o’clock showing with MovieTickets.com or tell you if it was going to rain tomorrow using WeatherBug. But questions like “What time is it in Paris?” or “When was President Obama born?” would likely end up with a list of search results. Now, with Wolfram Alpha, you’ll get a straightforward answer. You’ll not only find out that President Obama was born on Friday, August 4, 1961, but that this was 48 years, 11 months and 4 days ago. Or more specifically, it was 17,870 days ago on the 216th day of 1961. (You have to love that special brand of Wolfram Alpha answer, where you not only get the basic facts, but the facts in every way you could possibly want.)While the app told us that we were “stretching its capabilities” when we asked it “What’s the circumference of the Earth?”, it quickly answered, using Wolfram Alpha, that the Earth’s equatorial circumference was 24,901.47 miles. Where before we relied on Siri to ask simple questions about a specific set of real life situations, we now feel comfortable asking it the most inane of questions. The addition of Wolfram Alpha turns Siri into much more than simply a virtual personal assistant. It’s now a virtual personal researcher, too. As Siri CEO Dag Kittlaus once told us, Siri really is the “mother of all mashups.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

The Creative Web: Is SoundCloud the YouTube of Audio?

first_img12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Tags:#music#web richard macmanus 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Related Posts center_img 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App There are no shortage of consumption apps on the Web, especially since the iPad (in many ways the ultimate Web consumption device) arrived on the scene. But what about content creation apps? In the Web 2.0 era, we saw the rise of blogging platforms, social networks, and media sharing services like Flickr and YouTube. Some people say that 2011 will be about content curation, via services like Twitter and Tumblr. But I think there’s still a lot of action in the content creation space. I’ll be exploring some of the best and most promising content creation services over the coming weeks here on ReadWriteWeb, in a series called ‘The Creative Web.’The first service we’ll look at is a startup from Berlin, Germany, called SoundCloud. It’s a platform to publish music and audio to the Web – and it’s been experiencing rapid growth. Two prominent VC firms invested in SoundCloud earlier this year: Union Square Ventures and Index Ventures. Fred Wilson of the former believes that it won’t just be music that pushes SoundCloud to a mass audience, but other audio such as podcasts. That seems like a risky bet, but there’s a good chance SoundCloud will become big anyway – via music alone. SoundCloud is being used by professional musicians and amateurs alike. It’s also become a platform for other online music services, such as The Hype Machine and We Are Hunted. Trending alternative pop singer Lykke Li has been using SoundCloud to publish songs from her upcoming new album, Wounded Rhymes. There are also remixes of Li’s songs on her SoundCloud. Indeed, one of SoundCloud’s best features is that it allows artists to collaborate with others – including their fans – on remixes. 50 Cent and R.E.M. have both launched remix contests recently using SoundCloud. SoundCloud recently went over 3 million registered users. Given its growth and the fact that popular musicians are using it, is SoundCloud a threat to MySpace? I checked out Lykke Li’s MySpace page and the most recent entry is a link to a new song she just posted to SoundCloud (not available on MySpace). That song has 58 comments, as at time of writing. So yes, SoundCloud is a threat to MySpace. SoundCloud is hosting popular new music, tthere is social commentary happening around that music, and the site is becoming increasingly popular. What then of Fred Wilson’s hope that other audio creativity will blossom on SoundCloud? Wilson recorded a podcast on SoundCloud recently to explain. He noted that “the web is still too quiet, there’s not enough audio expression happening” – meaning podcasting, spoken word, even poetry. In that podcast, Wilson defined SoundCloud as an “online platform for audio expression and sharing on the Web and mobile devices.” “What YouTube is for video,” he said, “SoundCloud is for audio.” (at the end of 2008, Wilson called SoundCloud “Flickr for Musicians,” which indicates how the product has evolved since then: from a musician-focused service to a consumer-focused one that nevertheless still relies on musicians).Wilson elaborated further in a comment in his blog: “I believe that mobile phones as recording devices and tablets ascreation devices and “audio exhaust” from gaming are all game changersfor audio creation and sharing.”I’m skeptical that podcasting or spoken word audio will ever become a widespread activity on the Web. The problem is that listening to podcasts and spoken word audio requires focus – it just doesn’t fit into the fast-moving, multi-tasking media world we’re all living in. Audio will most likely never be shared and curated on a mass scale, like video is on YouTube. However, my guess is that SoundCloud won’t even need the audio aspect. It’s already got popular music acts like 50 Cent, R.E.M., Lykke Li, Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 using its service. And the platform is very impressive: the API being used by Hype Machine and others, widgets galore, over 100 apps hooked into it.Do you use SoundCloud? I’m curious to hear your thoughts too on the audio creation aspect of the product, do you think that will pan out?last_img read more

3 Affordable A/B Testing Tools For Small Businesses

A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts john paul titlow Like so many things in life, Google offers a free tool for A/B and multivariate testing. Google Website Optimizer is a popular tool that lets site owners set up simple A/B tests or more complex experiments involving multiple variables. Setting up experiments in the back-end interface is a pretty straight-forward process. Of course, you’ll need to build the alternate pages and drop a unique snippet of JavaScript into each one, as well as into the conversion goal page. Google Website Optimizer integrates with AdWords and like most of Google’s online marketing products, has a wealth of documentation and tutorials available. Optimizely Unlike Google’s solution, Optimizely is not free, but it’s worth paying for if you can spring for it. It features a browser-based WYSIWYG page editor for creating alternate versions of a given page. The only modification of your own site that’s required is to drop a single line of code before the closing tag. Once an experiment starts running, the data is available in real-time, which can be fascinating to watch. This is one perk that Google Website Optimizer does not offer. Plans start at $19 a month. SumoOptimize Tags:#biz#Software Guides#tips 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Sure, your company’s website could be improved. But with time and resources in such short supply, how do businesses know where to focus their energy? One answer is A/B testing, or the practice of publishing two variations of a Web page and measuring which one performs better. A/B testing has been used by large enterprises for years. Amazon uses it to optimize product listing pages. Google was once criticized by an outgoing designer for relying too heavily on data-driven methods like this.In general, A/B testing involves segmenting site traffic into different groups and showing each group a different version of the same landing page. Perhaps one page will contain different headline text or a different call-to-action button style. Another page will serve as the “goal” for the desired conversion. For example, a newsletter sign-up confirmation page or the final check-out page in an e-commerce shopping cart. The software will figure out which version of the page resulted in more clicks or conversions. A/B testing hasn’t historically been cheap, but in recent years, more affordable solutions have become available, enabling smaller businesses to take advantage of it. Below are a few options worth checking out. Google Website Optimizerlast_img read more

Ian Somerhalder Joins Rally For Climate Action And Clean Energy

first_imgHundreds of clean energy and climate action supporters – including Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder – rallied in Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville on Saturday, calling on Duke Energy to phase out its Asheville coal-fired power plant and replace it with clean, homegrown energy solutions like solar power and energy efficiency.“President Obama said we have a moral imperative to take bold action to address climate disruption,” said Mary Anne Hitt, senior director of Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. “Duke Energy’s Asheville coal plant is Western North Carolina’s largest source of carbon pollution that causes climate disruption. Phasing out this plant will clear the path to power Asheville with clean, local energy that will strengthen our vibrant community. Hundreds of supporters rallied today, representing thousands more across the region, and called for a clean energy economy for Asheville now.”Duke Energy’s Asheville coal plant is the largest source of climate pollution in Western North Carolina, pumping out as much carbon as 500,000 cars on the road every year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The plant also produces huge volumes of toxic coal ash waste which is stored in unlined ponds; these ponds sit directly above the French Broad River. Conservation groups like the French Broad Riverkeeper have documented groundwater contamination of toxic chemicals and heavy metals from these coal ash waste ponds.“In addition to huge amounts of carbon pollution, Duke Energy’s Asheville coal plant is dumping coal ash waste into unlined holes in the ground, and toxic chemicals from those pits are contaminating our groundwater and polluting the French Broad River,” said Hartwell Carson, the French Broad Riverkeeper with Western North Carolina Alliance. “Continuing to burn coal means more toxic coal ash waste. You can’t clean up coal ash while you’re still burning coal.”The Asheville Beyond Coal campaign represents more than a dozen organizations, including rally co-sponsors Western North Carolina Alliance, French Broad Riverkeeper, 350.org Asheville, Transition Asheville, Southwings, and the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. The Asheville Beyond Coal campaign launched in April 2012, and since then more than 2,000 area residents have taken action, such as signing a petition, calling on Duke Energy to phase out its Asheville coal-fired power plant and replace it with clean energy. The Asheville Beyond Coal campaign calls on Duke Energy to protect its local workers in the transition period from coal to clean energy.Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, Sierra Club activist Ian Somerhalder, Reverend Thomas Murphy of All Souls Episcopal Church, Drew Jones of Climate Interactive, and Dr. Richard Fireman, a former emergency room physician and volunteer leader with Interfaith Power & Light, joined Hitt and Carson on stage. The rally featured several musical acts, including CaroMia and local musicians Daniel Shearin (River Whyless), Alexandra Tressler, Tyler Herring, and Scott Murray of Southbound Turnaround. The Asheville Beyond Coal: Rally for our Future finished with a flash mob and choral performance by more than 50 singers, performing “Do You Hear the People Sing,” from Les Miserables.last_img read more
