Second place Arsenal in Premier League action

first_imgThe day’s action gets underway at 12.45, with a revived Everton’s trip to Swansaea. At three, Aston Villa’s battle against the drop sees them visit their manager Tim Sherwood’s former club, Tottenham. Hull start the day just a single place and two points above the drop-zone and they’re away to European hopefuls Southampton. Bottom side Leicester desperately need a win away to West Brom. Elsewhere Sunderland take on Crystal Palace, and West Ham entertain Stoke. Burnley play host to Arsenal where a win for the home side may see them climb out of the bottom three. For Arsenal, their goal is to keep the pressure up on leaders Chelsea, with games running out for a title challenge. Kick-off at Turf Moor is at half-past-five. last_img

Cougars eye perfect conference record

first_imgSANTA CLARITA – The ball landed in Dwayne Jones’ lap. Teammate Andre Murray’s shot had just come up short, bouncing off the rim when Jones got the rebound and put the basketball through the hoop at the buzzer. “(Riney’s) shot won the game for us,” Jones said. “I was just lucky to get that shot to tie the game. Everyone on our team is a scoring threat. Teams like to focus on one guy. That can kill a team right there.” The Cougars (23-5, 9-0) travel to Santa Monica again at 5:30 p.m. today and will be looking to keep their perfect conference record intact. They face Bakersfield again next week. “We can’t be thinking of the next game,” Bryson said. “We want to keep our nice undefeated record and set our selves up to clinch the conference.” A win against Santa Monica (10-15, 3-6) not only could mark the only time the school has ever had a 10-0 record against conference foes, but it could set up a showdown for the championship Wednesday at Bakersfield. COC has never finished a season undefeated against its conference. The Cougars went 11-1 in conference play during the 2004-05 season when they one their second consecutive conference title. The game solidified team chemistry, showed the Cougars they can’t be overconfident and look ahead to the next opponent, and may have established Jones as the go-to guy at crunch time. “When I get the ball and we have a thriller going on at the end of games, I like to get the ball in my hands and forget about being nervous,” said Jones, who averages 13.7 points and four boards per game. “Unfortunately, we haven’t made plays and we put ourselves in those situations. But I am confident I can always make those shots.” Santa Monica was a team COC knew should win. But the fact that Bakersfield, the Western State Conference’s top team at the time, was next on its schedule might have caused such a close game. Jones’ shot guaranteed the Cougars a first-place tie going into the Bakersfield game. COC went on to beat Bakersfield in another close game 98-94. “Dwayne (Jones) is a dependable guy,” said Everett Bryson, the Cougars’ power forward/center. “He’s very aggressive and his talent just stands out to me. Our guys can get open, and he’s a hustler. He can get open and when he gets the ball, he’s confident he can make the shot.” Jones, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound sophomore and Cleveland High product, hit another important shot against Citrus College last week to tie the game at 66 with 38 ticks left. That set up Gino Riney’s 16-foot jumper with three seconds left for another dramatic COC win. center_img It was a routine offensive rebound and bucket for Jones, but more importantly it was the game-wining shot for the College of the Canyons men’s basketball team against Santa Monica College Jan 17. The Cougars escaped with an 81-79 win that night, but the moment might have changed the season for coach Howard Fisher’s team. last_img read more

Second-half latest: Everton 0 Chelsea 0 – Costa goes close for Blues

first_imgDiego Costa went agonisingly close to giving Chelsea the lead in an increasingly open FA Cup quarter-final.A cagey first half saw both sides struggle to create opportunities but, after Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori went close with a second-half header, Costa was unlucky to see his effort roll across goal from a tight angle.Chelsea grew in confidence after a slow start to a fiercely competitive tie at Goodison Park.Everton played a high-tempo pressing game from the off, but Chelsea stayed solid defensively and refused to be rattled.Tom Cleverley had a feeble shot easily saved by Thibaut Courtois inside a minute. But the visitors slowly began to dominate possession and looked the more likely to score.Kenedy shot over after a fine run and clever interchange of passes with Pedro, and Willian went close with a free-kick late in the half.Costa, starting up front despite a hip injury which saw him come off in the Champions League defeat against Paris St-Germain, was booked early on following a tussle with Gareth Barry.Eden Hazard was left out of the squad but captain John Terry was included on the bench following injury.Everton: Robles; Coleman, Funes Mori, Jagielka, Baines; Cleverley, Barry; Lennon, McCarthy, Barkley; Lukaku.Subs: Howard, Stones, Niasse, Besic, Osman, Deulofeu, Kone.Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Ivanovic, Kenedy; Mikel, Matic; Willian, Fabregas, Pedro; Costa. Takeaways: Matt Chapman on getting best of Hader with go-ahead homer

first_imgOAKLAND — Josh Hader is one of the toughest relievers in baseball. But Matt Chapman did his homework and had a plan against the Brewers’ closer. In Tuesday’s game against Milwaukee, he saw seven Hader pitches before striking out swinging at a fastball. Chapman had all the intel he needed. In the eighth inning Thursday, with the A’s down a run and Robbie Grossman aboard, Chapman lifted a well-placed corner fastball over the center-field fence to help the A’s (62-48) to its 5-3, series-clinching …last_img

JSE’s new trading system goes live

first_img“The flexibility of the new system allows us to introduce even more product innovation and hence should bring increased liquidity to the market, something which any world class exchange strives to achieve,” added Thomson. “As the 11th largest derivatives exchange in the world by volume, we’ve always recognised that one of the ways to remain one of the world’s leading exchanges is to ensure that we use technology to our advantage,” Thomson said. “This system replacement is a case in point.” The JSE has unveiled a new equity derivatives trading system that has been specifically designed for the South African market, bringing with it new functionality and greater flexibility for local brokers, fund managers, market makers and other institutional investors. STT were the developers of the original trading and clearing software which has been in place since the start of electronic trading in 1994, but the time had come for the original system to be replaced. The new system has been specifically designed for the South African equity derivatives market which, in a number of instances, is a world leader as far as these markets are concerned. Locally designed Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material “However, since this was a total replacement of the 15-year old system we inherited when the JSE bought Safex and not merely an upgrade, we had to be absolutely certain that we’d catered for the needs of the equity derivatives market, which are quite different today than they were 15 years ago.” The new system brings greater visibility to the market with live on-screen prices for SSFs and Single Stock Options being available to the market for the first time. Traders will also see the narrowing of spreads as a result of the increased functionality of the new technology. “It has taken the JSE longer than anticipated to get the new system implemented,” JSE trading director Allan Thomson said in a statement this week. World leader Thomson pointed out that the new system was wholly designed by local company STT, and that the system was not only cost-efficient, but had applications that were already drawing the attention of other pre-eminent exchanges around the world. 18 August 2008 STT managing director Michelle Janke said the systems had to be enhanced to meet the changing needs of the exchange, notably the increased derivative trading volumes. The change would also eliminate a large amount of manual processes and provide the exchange with the flexibility it required, she said. “Options trading volumes using complex delta neutral products have also been improved,” Janke said. “To attract further liquidity, the system is focused on maximizing the number of prices displayed, by using complex algorithms.” SAinfo reporter The JSE is currently the largest single stock futures (SSF) market in the world in terms of number of contracts traded, while it also recently received recognition from the international derivatives fraternity for developing the Can Do Option, chosen as the most innovative product of the year.last_img read more

Report: Digital Music Sales Will Surpass CDs in 2012

first_imgBy now – the beginning of a new decade and well into the 21st century – it’s a story we’ve long come accustomed to: the music industry is dying a slow, painful, sputtering death at the hands of the Internet.According to analyst firm Forrester’s latest report, 2009 was “a lousy end to an even lousier decade” for the music industry and we shouldn’t expect much different until at least 2013. Last year, as a matter of fact, was one of the worst years yet, with a 13% decline from the year before. For much of the report, the numbers only confirm what we’ve already come to expect over the past decade. Music industry revenues in 2009 were $6.3 billion, less than half what they were in 1999, and people spent 32% less in 2009 on music than they spent in 2008. Of course the economy can’t be helping these numbers, but Forrester sees this as a trend that is going to continue until it gradually starts to even out in 2013. By 2014, the company predicts music industry revenue to level off at around $5.5 billion with digital sales taking up most, but not all, of the slack. mike melanson Related Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… The report also has one interesting event to note for 2012 and, no, it isn’t the destruction of the world at the hands of a Mayan death clock – digital music sales will finally surpass sales of physical media like CDs and vinyl. While it goes on to say that 2010 will be a better year than 2009 for the growth rate of spending on digital music, the overall numbers will likely trend downwards after that, as shown in the graph above.
