Your iPad is now the best Ingress scanner ever

first_imgOver the past year, Google’s Niantic team has been working on a handful of apps that directly encourage exploring the world around you. The Field Trip app is a more mainstream, sightseeing app that highlights historical points of interest and a variety of fun facts about the area you are currently wandering around in. As fun as that can be if you’re vacationing somewhere or out for a walk in a new place, it’s not for everyone. The other project, however, rapidly became an excuse to get off the couch and run around your home town to protect the minds of citizens everywhere from the opposing force in the game. Ingress is an interesting game for many different reasons, and its biggest adoption hurdle to date has been that you can only play the game on Android. Today, that stops being an issue.Ingress for iOS accomplishes all of the same basic things that the Android version does, acting as a scanner for you to interact with this invisible world of exotic particles and local domination efforts. If you’ve never played the game before, you’ll be asked to choose between the Enlightened or the Resistance factions, and from there you will be propelled into a game full of active users in your area willing to work with you to accomplish larger goals. If you are already familiar with the game, all you will need to do is log in with your Google account and get back in the fight. In a recent interview with Google’s John Hanke, head of the Niantic Project, he explained that most of the process porting the game from Android to iOS was simple. Unlike Android, where the team needed to account for many different screen sizes and performance types, there’s only four different device sizes. In using the app, there’s no real difference in the UI between the two platforms. If you already have an account, you’ll log in and everything will be the same. If you have never played before, you are walked through the tutorial and asked to choose a faction. One of the more interesting side effects of seeing Ingress on iOS is going to be the iPad, which will not only give you a larger scanner to interact with, but will allow you to rapidly switch back and forth between the game and the browser-based Intel Map to get a broader view of the area you are working in. The iPad has a long standing history of offering superior battery life to Android tablets, which could mean longer gameplay periods for more obsessed players.Regardless of which OS you are a fan of, Ingress is now available to a significant majority of the mobile users in the world and that can only be a good thing.last_img
