Italy stay perfect with comfortable win over Greece

first_imgItaly made it three wins from as many Group J matches with a 3-0 victory over Greece in their pursuit of a place at Euro 2020.Roberto Mancini’s side added to wins over Finland and Liechtenstein as Nicolo Barella, Lorenzo Insigne and Leonardo Bonucci all scored inside 10 first-half minutes in Athens. It leaves Italy – who are yet to concede in qualifying – with a maximum return of nine points, while Greece remain on four.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Andrea Belotti was thwarted by Zeca’s timely intervention as he sought to get on the end of a threatening throughball inside the opening five minutes. The Torino striker then showed poor technique in lifting a shot from the edge of the box well over the crossbar at the end of a promising move. But the breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Greece were overrun at the back and Belotti’s cutback was slammed home by Barella.#EuropeanQualifiers23’YES!!!! #BARELLA POPS UP TO OPEN THE SCORING! #GreeceItaly  0-1 #VivoAzzurro pic.twitter.com/qaglYvd4N1— Italy (@azzurri) June 8, 2019Greece charged forward in an attempt to get back into the match but were caught on the counter-attack as Insigne darted past Andreas Samaris and poked a deft finish beyond goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas. The match as a contest was over before half-time, Bonucci’s header from Emerson’s delivery clipping the upright on its way in.With the points practically assured, Italy produced a composed second-half showing in which retaining possession took precedence over creating opportunities. And Greece could do little to instigate a turnaround, Georgios Masouras going close only to see an offside flag raised as the hosts’ frustrations grew. When substitute Manolis Siopis fired wildly over the bar from a decent position, it was clear that even a consolation goal was going to be beyond Angelos Anastasiadis’ side. What does it mean? Italy in cruise controlWith a 100 per cent record from their opening three games, Italy are already five points ahead of third-placed Greece and look well set to qualify. Mancini’s men have not yet conceded a goal, which further underlines the strides they have made since failing to reach the 2018 World Cup.Left flank woes for GreeceGreece struggled in general to contain Italy in the first 45 minutes, but it was down the visitors’ left side that the threat came, be it from Insigne or Marco Verratti. The former scored, the latter was typically industrious. Kourbelis bypassed in midfieldDimitrios Kourbelis was perhaps more a symptom of Greece’s first-half capitulation than a cause, but the way the game passed him by showed just how dominant Italy were. After managing just 11 touches and seven passes, he was substituted at the break. What’s next?Greece remain in Athens to welcome Armenia on Tuesday, while Mancini’s men host Bosnia-Herzegovina in Turin on the same night.  read morelast_img read more

Iwobi welcomes Arsenal interest in Zaha & Carrasco

first_imgAlex Iwobi insists he has no intention of leaving Arsenal and welcomes the potential signings of Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Carrasco in his position. The Gunners have reportedly made a £40 million ($51m) opening bid for Crystal Palace star Zaha, although his employers are apparently holding out for closer to £80m ($102m).And 25-year-old Carrasco has also been linked with Unai Emery’s Gunners, with the Arsenal boss reportedly hoping to lure him from Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Asked if those rumours put his place at the Emirates Stadium under threat, Iwobi told  Goal : “I don’t have any idea of going anywhere else, I’m an Arsenal player.”For a big club like Arsenal, you mentioned two great players so it will be exciting to have them.”I don’t know anything that’s going on behind closed doors.”In their first season since Arsene Wenger’s tenure came to an end, Arsenal missed out on a Premier League top-four spot by just one point but had another shot at Champions League qualification with the Europa League final.Although they ultimately suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in Baku, Iwobi was pleased with the Gunners’ first season under Emery.Unai Emery Arsenal Chelsea Europa League 2019“It was good, he demanded a lot from us,” the winger said.”We enjoyed working under him but we marginally missed out of the Champions League and unfortunately, we were unable to get the result we needed in the Europa League final.”You can see there is a big progression, everyone is enjoying it. We look forward to next season.”The Nigeria international made 35 Premier League appearances last season, more than in any other campaign and he insists he’s grateful to Emery for giving him the chance to prove himself.”I was involved quite a lot last season,” he continued. “Obviously you want to start as many games as you can but it doesn’t work that way when you have a team like Arsenal, you just have to do well and whenever the opportunity comes, do your best. I just have to say thank you for the opportunity he is giving me. “I’m happy to play anywhere [for Arsenal], I’ll play wherever I’m told to play. I’ve always seen myself as a midfielder, like an attacking midfielder but I’ll always give my best whether I’m told to play in the middle or somewhere else.”The Gunners will be hoping to return to the Champions League next season having failed to finish in the top four since 2015-16.And Iwobi is confident that the north Londoners are capable of producing a strong campaign. He added: “On a good day, we’re able to beat any team as we showed last season.”I think it’s more of a mental thing, make sure we are mentally ready for every game and we will be able to do well.”Arsenal kick-off their Premier League season away to Newcastle on August 11.last_img read more

3 New College Football Bowl Games Being Added For 2020 Season

first_imgA general view of Northwestern's football field inside Wrigley Field.CHICAGO – NOVEMBER 18: A general view as the Northwestern Wildcats practice for a game against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday November 20 at Wrigley Field on November 18, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)Some argue that college football already has too many bowl games. We’ve had a few instances of sub-.500 teams receiving bids to compete in the post-season, due to a lack of eligible teams. In a few years, there will be even more exhibitions added to the slate. There have been rumors of a Chicago bowl game for a little while now. Wrigley Field has already hosted one Big Ten football game, and will be doing more down the road with a new seating configuration that better allows for football in the hallowed baseball park. The Wrigley Field bowl game is the headliner in these three new bowl additions. Former ESPN college football insider Brett McMurphy, who is set to join Stadium for coverage sometime soon, filed a report via his Facebook page.McMurphy says that new bowl games are coming to Chicago, Myrtle Beach, and one more city yet to be decided. From the full report:The Chicago bowl, to be played at Wrigley Field, will feature the Big Ten against the ACC, sources said. To add the Chicago bowl in 2020, the Big Ten is expected to end its affiliation with the San Francisco Bowl (formerly Foster Farms Bowl) after 2019.Myrtle Beach and ESPN officials have had ongoing discussions about starting this bowl game, sources said. The most likely conferences affiliated with Myrtle Beach could be Conference USA, the Sun Belt or the Mid-American. If the Sun Belt is involved, look for the league to cut ties in 2020 with either Arizona, Dollar General, Camellia or Cure, all part of the Sun Belt’s current bowl lineup. Some potential options for the third bowl addition: Tempe, or somewhere in the Carolinas. The third new bowl? This isn’t as clear cut. Arizona State has shown interest in adding a bowl in Tempe. And a number of cities/communities have expressed interest in the past including Charleston, S.C., and Greenville, N.C. The only certainty is before a bowl can be created, it must have a contract with two conferences and/or BYU/Army.This is not the only big bowl news from the past few weeks. With the city’s turn as a big sports town, the Las Vegas Bowl is set to become a more prominent event.Right now, the Las Vegas Bowl is played at UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium, between the Mountain West and Pac-12. The SEC is the favorite to replace that MWC slot in the game, per McMurphy. With the Oakland Raiders moving the Vegas, the bowl will be played at the new NFL stadium, giving the game a bigger venue befitting a Power Five bowl match-up.last_img read more

Naomi Osaka giving up US citizenship to play for Japan in 2020 Olympics: Media

But prejudice remains against haafu, or half-Japanese, including cases of bullying against mixed-race children. And while Japan has largely embraced Osaka, she still faces some indignities. Two weeks ago, Osaka laughed off comments by a Japanese comedy duo who said she was too sunburned and needed some bleach, and turned the tables with a plug for Japanese cosmetic giant Shiseido, one of her sponsors. In January, Japanese noodle company Nissin removed a commercial in which a cartoon character depicting Osaka was shown with pale skin and light brown hair, after it prompted an outcry. Also Read | Shanghai Masters: Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev reach 3rd round; Andy Murray outAlso see:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. The year everything changes. The first year of your adult life where you actually accomplish a New Year’s resolution. “Outrageous,” you might be thinking. “Who do you think I am, Mark Zuckerberg?!” Normally you would be right — it’s basically impossible for non-Zuckerbergs to keep resolutions. But here’s our sneaky little secret to success: Just pick a resolution that you can accomplish with a measly one day’s worth of solid work. Piece of cake! You’ll be done and about your business in a matter of hours, then you can spend the rest of the year reveling in braggadocio about how you totally slayed your goal. Sounds great, right? So now there’s just the business of choosing a resolution that fits those guidelines, which — givers that we are — we’ve already taken care of for you: This year will be the year you clean your closet.Lest you doubt the feasibility of purging your closet in one day, or the impact such a simple task can have on your quality of life, we guinea-pigged ourselves and tackled a staffer’s overstuffed closet as a trial run. In the end, he walked away with two full trash bags (one destined for the garbage and the other for a tax-deductible donation to Goodwill) and the light-as-a-feather freedom that comes from clearing away all that built-up closet detritus. And all for the low, low price of one day’s work. So roll up those sleeves, grab some garbage bags, and follow our quick guide to take your closet from a fabric monster’s vomitorium to a pristine, organized wardrobe.Step 1: Prepare ThyselfWhen it comes to learning how to clean your closet, it’s important to know that it will take time. This isn’t a 10 -minute affair; the whole process requires emptying your closet and drawers, piling everything in a gloriously intimidating mountain around you (Ok, you don’t have to do it all at once if you don’t want to), and sorting items into three piles: keep, donate, and destroy. This is gonna take a while, so get comfy.Don’t be this guy.Step 2: Start with the Small StuffNow that you’ve steeled your resolve, keep yourself from being bogged down by the difficulty (or annoyance) of the task by starting with the easiest genre of clothing: undergarments. That’s right, choke back your shame and pop open that sock drawer. Is it full of mismatched pairs, lonely singles, socks with holes, or socks that are so over-worn the bottoms have mutated into an entirely separate color from the rest? If so (and who are we kidding, you are reading this, after all), it’s time to start tossing.Do the same thing with your undershirts and underwear. Anything with a hole in it gets tossed immediately. Oh, it just has that one tiny little hole that’s only visible if you move your arm forward, backward, up, down, or outward? Well that’s fine to keep then. We’re joking of course — get that trash out of there, what are you even doing? You know those emergency rations at the back of the drawer that you’ve convinced yourself you should keep in case the world is ever ending on laundry day and you’d rather be caught in stained undies than no undies? Come on, we both know what those “mystery” stains are. Dear god, get those out of there. Toss them into the trash pile without a second thought.Next, let’s tackle that old T-shirt collection. This is also pretty simple: Dump or donate all the old tees you haven’t worn in the past few months. Some people may suggest a year, but the fact that you’ve ended up here proves you can’t be trusted with that sort of leniency. If you haven’t worn it since Thanksgiving, it’s probably a no-go. We’re not heartless, though: We get that tees are especially prone to having emotional and nostalgic trappings, like college football shirts or social event tees. You can keep those (for real this time, you can), but if you’re not wearing them, then they should be banished from your regular closet or dresser. Put them somewhere out of sight, in an airtight container away from the sun, and they’ll still be fresh and stable when you’re ready to re-live those quarterback days after your 60th rolls around.Undergarments are relatively inexpensive, so it’s not a huge financial loss. Besides, you know half that stuff was a decade old anyway, you monster. If you’re looking for a new pair to replace the ancient ones you just jettisoned, try out some of our favorite skivvies, socks, and undershirts.Step 3: Sort Your Shirts and Oust OuterwearOnce you’re done sorting through those old tees, move on to your other shirts. Typically, these should be hanging in your closet. If we’ve already lost you on this step, you need to take a few quiet moments of honest reflection to figure out what made you into a person who would fold up an Oxford button-down and put it in a drawer. Come back when you’re done … we’ll wait.If your shirts already were hanging up (or if you’ve just quickly hung them all up in abject shame), do a quick scan and eliminate any shirts that immediately stand out to you. You know the ones we’re talking about — those flashy prints and risky colors you can’t pull off and never should have bought, those outdated styles, and all that stuff you know damn well doesn’t fit anymore. Once the first pass has been made, go back and try on every remaining shirt. Every. Single. One. If it doesn’t fit properly, donate it. Chances are you’ll never get around to hauling it down to the tailor anyway. If you’re trying to lose weight and keeping a too-small-shirt is a good motivator for you, by all means, keep one goal shirt. But only one. Just like with your T-shirts, if anything has a tear or stain or hole, chuck it. You’re never going to hunt down the exotic ingredients for the mystical poultice to remove those set-in spaghetti stains from your lucky sweater, dude. Just let it go.Do the same with jackets and other outerwear items. You don’t need to keep every single coat Gam-Gam has ever given you for Christmas, so donate the ones you seldom use — someone out there will make them a much better home than the forgotten back corners of your closet. A suit or blazer really doesn’t make you look super profesh if there’s a big mustard stain on the collar or a busted seam. And no, you can’t just slap a flag pin over it and start acting really patriotic. Throw it out.Step 4: Purge Those PantsFinally, it’s on to pants. You probably have fewer of these than shirts, which makes this a nice cool down after that pro-level purge you just tackled. Toss out torn, ripped, or worn out sweatpants and joggers, along with any other sportswear that is just too bruised, beaten, or coated in next-level stank to hold onto. Pants that are too small also need to go. Resist the urge to hold onto them, even if you’re convinced you’ll be squeezing back into them in a few months’ time. If you lose weight, reward yourself by buying new ones — it’ll be a lot more fun anyway. As with all your other clothing, any pants that have holes or stains should make a bee-line right for the destroy pile. Those frayed jean cuffs were pretty dope when you were an angsty teen trying to cobble your garage grunge band together, but you have to adult now, so give ‘em a good culling.Step 5: The Reveling in Braggadocio PartSo there you have it — an easy resolution that will make dressing in the morning a snap and will save you the embarrassment of ever having to dip into a shame-filled closet in front of company. Now that you’ve experienced the glory and satisfaction of accomplishing a resolution, you basically own Facebook. Congratulations! Plus, you’ve earned the bonus reward of freeing up enough space for some new duds, which, as a fashion-loving magazine, we applaud. Next step (if you’re feeling up to it): closet organization. Although it would be easier to check out one of our favorite apps for keeping non-closet resolutions.Featured image courtesy of ©2011 Dorann Weber/Getty Images. JIS to Continue Support at Mount Olivet

first_imgThe Jamaica Information Service (JIS) is committing to a fourth year of support to the Mount Olivet Boys Home in Manchester in 2013. “We want to commit ourselves once again for another year. We know that these boys will do well and we will be supporting them to the best of our ability,” said the agency’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Donna-Marie Rowe. The home, located in the hills of Walderston, is home to 28 boys, ages six to 18 years. The JIS adopted the home in December 2009, and since then, has been making quarterly visits, to spend quality time with the boys and mentor them, provide school supplies and items for the home, and carry out refurbishing work. The agency’s outreach activity is bolstered by a number of organisations, which have continued to positively impact the lives of the boys. These include long standing supporters Josephs, Lasco Food Distributors, Continental Baking Company Limited, AzMart, Jamaica Broilers, and Wisynco, with Yohan Blake’s YB Afraid Foundation joining the list of sponsors last year, and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and Sandals Foundation coming on board this year. Last weekend (December 15), the JIS staff journeyed to the home for the annual Christmas luncheon and awards ceremony. They were joined by well-wishers and sponsors, including triple Olympic medallist Blake, who brought Christmas cheer and well-needed items for the home. The day’s activities included the presentation of certificates to high-achieving boys, the planting of a vegetable garden through partnership with RADA, and the handing over of items by the sponsors. Mrs. Rowe said she was pleased with the development of the boys over the four years. “We are touched every time we come here. It is a very moving experience for us to see the boys grow right before our eyes. Every boy here is very precious to us and we have purposed it in our hearts to mentor them,” she said. She stated that the JIS will keep its word on mentoring and visiting the boys in the coming year. Rev. Norbert Stephens, General Secretary of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, which operates the Mount Olivet and Pringle Home in St. Mary, lauded the work being done by JIS and other civic-minded organisations at the facility, and expressed pleasure with the day’s activities. “I really do appreciate the partnership the church has with the wider community, and moreso those who, like JIS, are good corporate citizens,” Rev. Stevens said. Director of the Home, Sonia Lowe, also expressed gratitude for the assistance being given and spoke of the progress being made by the boys. Mrs. Lowe pointed out that the boys have faced many challenges in their lives and some continue to struggle, but noted that “today is a day to focus on their accomplishments.” Most of the boys, she informed, are attending “structured counselling sessions”, which have proven to be worthwhile.  “I see that as an accomplishment. They come and ask about these sessions and I see it as an achievement for us and for them,” she told JIS News. Lauding the mentorship programme through which JIS staff members ‘adopt’ a child and maintains contact throughout the year, Mrs. Lowe said: “we appreciate the fact that you call them on a regular basis and send letters. We are thankful for those who are on this journey with them.” Mr. Blake, for his part, informed that his foundation has installed water storage tanks to provide steady water supply to the facility, which previously had to purchase water. “When we started, we realized that they had a water problem, so we decided to do a water project for them,” he said. YB Afraid is also responding to the need for recreation by donating a flat screen television and Nintendo systems for a games room. Mr. Blake also informed of plans to create a library at the home. He also had a word of encouragement for the boys. “This is not the end of the world. Many have gone through it. Just keep your head up high and never say never,” he told them. RADA Extension Officer at the Mandeville Region, Hopeton Panton, whose team was on hand to assist with the planting of broccoli, lettuce, sweet peppers, and cabbage seedlings and will oversee the progress of the vegetable garden, told JIS News that RADA will be providing “day-to-day management of the crops”. Lay pastor and member of the board of the home, Jeffect Watson, expressed gratitude for the vegetable garden and told JIS News how beneficial it will be for the facility. “We are trying to see if we can be self-sufficient with vegetables and animals. It will also cut off some of our expenses. When we reap, we sell some to the market and I think that it is something worthwhile. We were looking forward to this for a very long time. We are very happy for the JIS and RADA coming in and helping us with this,” he stated. Mr. Watson also thanked the YB Afraid Foundation for the water tanks. “When we heard of Yohan Blake coming to help us with our water we were very grateful. We had owed a lot of money for water and so we were very thankful,” he said. Fourteen boys received awards for outstanding performance in various categories including most improved behaviour, most helpful, most outstanding student and Boy of the Year. A variety of items were given to the boys and staff at the home including blankets, sheets, toiletries, toys, food items, snacks, juices.last_img read more
